City of Prescott Recognizes Active Military with Yellow Ribbon
Have you ever seen yellow ribbons displayed around town tied around trees, columns and on bumper stickers? For those who don’t know the display of a yellow ribbon is a sign of loyalty to family, friends or loved ones away in the military, or to welcome them home and recognizes those for their service to our country. The yellow ribbon has always been a part of military culture. It popped up sporadically during the first Gulf War, but surged in popularity during the first years of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has become synonymous with waiting or hoping for the return of a loved one who is a service member.
The City of Prescott has begun displaying a yellow ribbon on a pillar near the entrance to City Hall on Cortez Street. Mayor Greg Mengarelli announced the start of the yellow ribbon display at the Prescott City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 27. A city news release noted that three city employees currently are serving active duty, and one is expected to deploy soon.
“It’s important for us to keep these individuals in our thoughts and prayers as they serve their country,” Mengarelli said. “The yellow ribbon will remain in place as long as we have city employees serving active duty in the military.”
The town of Prescott offers many resourceful programs for active military members and their families as well as local veteran services. Some of these programs include Yavapai County – Arizona Coalition for Military Families which offer military and veteran navigation services, and Prescott College, the first private college in Arizona certified as a Veterans Supportive Campus with a Veteran Resource Center (VRC) which helps and employs veterans in the community.
