Originally built in 1901, the two-story Victorian home located at Mt Vernon and Goodwin was worn down and in need of repair – and believed to be haunted by the local kids. When the owner Mr. Smith got wind of the rumors that the home was haunted, he decided to have some fun the following Halloween. By 1969 his property was nicknamed the Pumpkin King and paved the way for the other homes on Mt Vernon Street to join in the spooky fun.
Today, Mt Vernon Street is the place to be on Halloween night in Prescott, Arizona for locals and visitors alike. By 3:00 pm the police will have the street closed off, and due to the growing popularity the city of Prescott helps with the cost of the candy that is handed out on Halloween night. Beware though, should you decide to purchase a home on Mt Vernon Street! Every homeowner is expected to participate in this long-running Prescott, Arizona tradition.
