The Monsoon Season has officially begun in Northern Arizona! During Arizona monsoons, lightning strikes, high winds, wildfires, tornadoes, flash flooding and extreme heat can cause death, injuries and millions of dollars in property damage, according to the National Climatic Data Center. With monsoon season in full swing, the southwest and Prescott residents alike will be hit by severe weather-related dangers. Here are a few monsoon safety tips for Prescott residents.
Be aware of flash flood risks: More deaths each year occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm-related hazard because people underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in cars that are swept downstream. If you live in a flood prone area, have an evacuation plan, know where to find high ground, and be prepared with materials such as sandbags, plywood, and plastic sheeting to make quick repairs after a severe storm.
Leave lightning alone: There is no place outside that is safe from a lightning strike, so don’t stop to try to catch photos of lightning storms. It’s not worth the risk! When a storm approaches go to a nearby large substantial building or a fully enclosed metal-topped vehicle. Remaining indoors at least thirty minutes after seeing the last lightning and hearing the last thunder to eliminate the risk at the end of storms. And please don’t forget to bring pets indoors as lightning and thunder are very scary for pets, and they are likely to panic or even run away.
Be prepared for a power outage: You never know when a monsoon storm could lead to a power outage so it’s best to be as prepared as possible. Have flashlights, batteries, candles and matches in an easy to find location or dispersed throughout your home, and make sure everyone in your home knows where to find these items. Protect sensitive electrical equipment by installing power protection devices and unplugging sensitive electronics before the storm arrives.
Remember, being prepared and taking precaution during the monsoon season could save your life and the lives of those your care about. Please feel free to share these safety tips with your family and friends! And always, if you are considering a new custom home in the Prescott area, we can help!
