New Pickleball Court Open In Prescott
Construction on a new pickleball court in Prescott, which began in early February, is now complete. The pickleball complex is a partnership between the City of Prescott, the Prescott Pickleball Association, and Yavapai County. Although a push for public pickleball courts has been underway for years, the fundraising effort for the Pioneer Park project began about a year ago.
The association raised much of the money for the project, the city and county also contributed. The Prescott City Council later agreed to contribute $25,000 in matching funds to the effort, and Yavapai County agreed to put in a parking lot. City Councilwoman Billie Orr, an advocate of the courts, pointed out that the effort has raised nearly $150,000 toward the cost of the complex. That included contributions from a number of local businesses, developers and organizations. Currently, the total contributions stand at about $147,000 along with another $50,000 to $60,000 in “in-kind” donations of services.
“There is a huge demand (for pickleball courts),” stated volunteer Randy Price, a pickleball enthusiast who has been overseeing the construction. “Estimates have the number of players in the community at about 1,000,”he added.
The new Pioneer Park complex is the first public outdoor pickleball courts in the area and among the first in the state. The complex is located next to the Brownlow Trailhead at Pioneer Park, 1200 Commerce Drive. This is good news for the hundreds of pickleball devotees in the Prescott community, say organizers of the project. Best of all the new pickelball courts are open to the public and available for use free of charge. The addition of the new pickelball courts join the hordes of hikers, mountain bikers, inline skaters, baseball and softball players, and soccer enthusiasts that already congregate at the northeast-Prescott park.
