Preparing Your Home for Colder Weather

October 28, 2019

The weather in Prescott, Arizona is absolutely beautiful this time of year, but in a few weeks, we will begin to see the cooler temperatures set in. One of the best things about living in northern Arizona is that we get to experience the four seasons, but the winter weather can be surprising. Do you know how to prepare your home for colder weather? Here are a few tips to keep your home safe this winter:

Winterizing: you can extend the life of your winter fuel by ensuring that your windows and doors are have weather-stripping, and that your walls, crawl spaces and attics are properly insulated. If you plan to leave your Prescott home for the winter season, you may consider hiring a professional to help you fully winterize your home, including plumping, pipes, etc.

Water Mains: in case of a water burst in your plumbing, it is a good idea to know where your water main is located, and how to turn it off in the event of an emergency situation.

Heating Sources: in Prescott homes can use a variety of heating resources during the colder weather. Some homes use propane, while others rely on wood burning stoves. Have your furnace inspected before you use it this winter to ensure proper operation, and schedule to have your chimney cleaned by a professional. Every home should have a functional fire extinguisher, and everyone in the home should know how to use it, in the event of a house fire.

Stock Up on Winter Supplies: rock salt, or products that help melt snow and ice on walkways is a must in the winter weather conditions and be sure that your snow shovel is conveniently located. Be sure to stock up on wood if you are burning a stove, as well as propane. Most businesses that sell propane are now offering pre-buy pricing to make it more affordable to prepare for the colder weather.

Pipes and Plants: newspaper, plastic and even bedding can work for insulating your home’s pipes. Allow faucets to drip, even a little bit will help to prevent pipes from freezing. Most of the landscaping in the Prescott area is hardy enough to withstand the colder weather however some plants may do better with a little protection, especially during a snowstorm. Plan ahead and protect your plants with bedding or a plastic cover.

Enjoy the beautiful Prescott weather, but be sure prepare your home for the colder weather and prevent winter catastrophes from happening.
